Multichannel installation investigates the relation between the human, architecture and natural

sources as a tool of power and political system, taking as an example the space of a former Polish-

Soviet Friendship’s building.

The former building of the Polish-Soviet Friendship was finished in 1980 and designed by Marek

Różański, Bogdan Popławski, Danuta Rybak and Jerzy Pluta. Going downstairs, to the underground

you will get to the space of an abandoned pool, sauna and a gym room which were used as a spa

complex, probably by the special guests from the “partner” countries.

The spa’’s space, which is small and secretly hidden- contrasting with the big, dehumanized spaces

of the representative parts of the building and its brutalistic forms of architecture- was holding an

underground water reservoir. Some of the water signs you can find outside of the building.

The sculpture created in 1985 by an artist Teresa Brzóskiewicz “Wisła i Wołga” [Vistula and Volga]-

representation of the two rivers embodied in two women figures- is located in front of the main door

of the building, from the side of Marszałkowska Street just next to “Za Żelazną Bramą” estate

(1965-72).

The sculpture was fitting in the trends popular in the socialism period in Poland- one of them was

closely connected to propaganda saying about “good” relations between Poland and Soviet Union,

the other one was a trend from a decade before connected to a program of “humanisation of the

urban spaces (especially the young estates)” in which the sculptress also actively took part.

Next to the entrance of the 3D-like “Oka” cinema opened in 1981 (name taken from another river on

the terrain of the former Soviet Union), you can see a bronze relief, also designed by Brzóskiewicz.

Its organic shapes are referring to the old cinema’s name, resembling the rushing current of the river

or its dry trough.

A concept by Mats Gustafsson:

ONE room.
ONE artist/artist.
ONE audience.
ONE minute.

The audience does not know who will play (and why).

Audience is led into a room – one at the time, where one musician is waiting and playing a one minute solo, composed or improvised depending on the will, urge and idea of the performer.

When the minute is over. The audience will be led out by an assistant, later bringing another audience (one person) into the same room, meeting either the same artist or an entirely different one.

All following the rules of 1 + 1 + 1+ 1

The piece will continue until there are no audience left in line waiting outside the ONE room.
